Changing a SOLIDWORKS Serial Number

Sometimes it may be necessary to change your SOLIDWORKS serial number for your computer, for instance if you are updating your yearly Student Home Use number, or if you are changing from a standalone to a network installation.

You can change your serial number directly through the SOLIDWORKS Installation Manager.

Changing the Serial Number

If you are currently using a standalone SOLIDWORKS license you should first deactivate your licence. To do this, open SOLIDWORKS and from the Help menu select Licenses and then Deactivate.... Follow the prompts to deactivate the licence and then close SOLIDWORKS. (This step is not necessary if you are changing from a network license serial number to a standalone serial number.)
Open Control Panel on the computer. If you are using Windows 10 or 11, you can get to Control Panel by searching for it as in the screenshot below.
Click on Uninstall a program.
From the list of installed programs find SOLIDWORKS, select it and click Change.

Please Note: If the only option available is Uninstall, then SOLIDWORKS was installed using an Administrative Image and it may be the case that your IT administrator wishes to update the administrative image and re-install the software himself. If this is the case your IT administrator should contact us for further instructions. However, if you need to use the software straight away you MUST Uninstall the software yourself and then re-install locally.
The SOLIDWORKS Installation Manager will now launch. Select Modify your installation and click Next.
On the Serial Number screen of the Installation Manager you can now change the SOLIDWORKS serial number to the new one that you want to use. Once the new serial number is entered in, click Next.
Click Next, keeping your settings as before:
On the Summary screen, tick box for I accept the terms of the SOLIDWORKS License Agreement then click the Modify Now button to finish:
