Changing LaserCAM Settings for Users with Restricted Rights on the Computer

Notes

Sometimes teacher's/technician's may find that they are unable to change the settings on the LaserCAM driver which is most often caused by the school's security settings.

A typical example may be that you try to change the power/speed settings ready for output, you click Setup and then OK, but when you go to check the power/speed settings again you find they they have reverted to default.

Cause of Issue

The LaserCAM power/speed settings are saved in a file on the computer. If the user currently logged in does not have permission to edit this file, the power/speed settings will not be saved and output to the machine.

Solution for LaserCAM Driver Version V5.00 or above
  1. Log in as an Administrator on the computer and go to the folder "C:\LTT".

  2. Inside this folder you will find a file such as "LTTLaserCAM_A2+.ini" depending on your model of LaserCAM. (There may be multiple files here if you have more than one driver installed).

  3. Right-click on the file and click on Properties.

  4. Go to the Security tab.

  5. If you see a button on this page that says Edit..., please click on this. If not, please continue.

  6. You now need to change the security settings so that the correct users are able to Modify and Write to the file.

The users should now be able to change the power/speed settings.

To test that these changes are successful, you can do the following:

  1. Open a new 2D Design document.

  2. Go to ‘File’ > ‘Print Setup’ and then select the LaserCAM and click OK. If you get a dialog box saying “Match current printer”, then please click ‘Yes’. (You should always do this when outputting to the LaserCAM).

  3. Now go to ‘File’ > ‘Print’, and click on ‘Properties’. Try changing the Power and Speed settings, and then click Setup and OK to close the Preferences menu.

  4. Now go back into ‘Properties’. If the settings are what you entered in the previous step, you should be good to go. If the settings have gone back to their default values, then the permissions settings have not been changed correctly – if this occurs then please double check that all of the options are set to ‘Allow’ for all of the groups in the steps above.

Solution for LaserCAM Driver Version V4 or below

Over the years, there have been several iterations of the LaserCAM driver and various combinations of security settings used by schools.

  1. Log in as an Administrator on the computer.

  2. You need to find the LaserCAM settings file on your computer, this may be in one of the following locations. Work down from the top of this list. If you find a file continue on to the next steps.

Folder: "C:\LTT", File: "LTTLaserCAM_A2+.ini", depending on your model of LaserCAM.
Folder: "C:\LTTDAT", File: "LTTLaserCAM_A2+.ini", depending on your model of LaserCAM.
    Folder: "C:\Windows\System32\spool\drivers\w32x86\3", File: "LTTILS-III.ini".
    Folder: "C:\Windows\System32\spool\drivers\w32x86\3", File: "LTTILS-3M.ini".
Folder: "C:\Windows\System32\spool\drivers\w32x86\3", File: Any file starting with LTT.

  3. Right-click on the file and click on Properties.

  4. Go to the Security tab.

  5. If you see a button on this page that says Edit..., please click on this. If not, please continue.

  6. You now need to change the security settings so that the correct users are able to Modify and Write to the file.

You may also need to relax the security for the printer itself:

  1. Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers.

  2. Find the LaserCAM. Right click the icon and select Printer Properties.

  3. Select the Security tab from the top. Here you will see a table showing all the eligible log-on groups for this computer and what they can and can’t do. Make sure that any group you want to use the LaserCAM have permission to "Print", "Manage this printer" and "Manage documents" – i.e. tick all the boxes.

If you have any problems please get in touch.
