Installing SOLIDWORKS Standalone/Home Use Edition

Note: This page is NOT relevant to users installing the Network Edition of SOLIDWORKS.
In this case, please use our Network Installation Guide

This guide provides step by step instructions to install SOLIDWORKS onto your computer.

Introduction

Before undertaking these instructions, you must first:

  1. Check that the operating system on your computers is compatible with the SOLIDWORKS version you are installing. For SOLIDWORKS 2019, this is Windows 7 SP1, 64-bit and Windows 10, 64-bit only.

Full details can be found at the SOLIDWORKS System Requirements page (please note that the remaining specs on this page are only recommended and not necessary - we do not expect schools to have computers with these specs).

Instructions

  1. If you have a download of the software, you will have an exe file that will be called something like "SolidWorksSetup2019.exe". Double click on this file and a "WinZip Self-Extractor" box will open.

  2. Click UnZip, and once completed click on OK.

  1. The SOLIDWORKS Installation Manager should open.

Note: At this point you can choose an "Individual" installation, or you can "Download and share all files". If you are having issues when using the "Individual" installation, you should try again using the "Download and share all files" to eliminate any network issues during installation.

  2. Select Individual (on this computer) and then click Next.

  3. Enter your Serial Numbers. These will either begin with 9020, 9701 or 9700. With certain educational licences, when you enter your serial number into the 3D Design > SOLIDWORKS section, then other components will automatically unlock on the next screen.

  4. You can now see what components to install.

  5. For schools, we recommend clicking the CHANGE button next to Products, and ticking the following components (leaving most of them on default). When finished click Back to Summary:

    • SOLIDWORKS (Default: Ticked and all sub-components ticked apart from Visual Studio Tools for Applications (VSTA))
    • SOLIDWORKS Languages (Default: English only ticked)
    • eDrawings (Default: Ticked)
    • SOLIDWORKS Explorer (Default: Unticked)
    • SOLIDWORKS Flow Simulation (Default: Ticked)
    • PV360 Network Client (Default: Unticked)
    • SOLIDWORKS Plastics (Default: Unticked)
    • SOLIDWORKS Electrical (RECOMMEND UNTICKING. Default: Ticked)
TechSoft recommend unticking this component as it involves settings up SQL Server Database. In 99% of cases SOLIDWORKS Electrical is not required in a school environment.

    • SOLIDWORKS Composer (Default: Ticked with only the sub-component SOLIDWORKS Composer Player ticked)
    • SOLIDWORKS Composer Player (Default: Unticked)
    • SOLIDWORKS Inspection (Default: Unticked)
    • SOLIDWORKS Visualize (Default: Ticked)
    • SOLIDWORKS Visualize Boost (Default: Unticked)
    • SOLIDWORKS CAM (Default: Ticked)
    • SOLIDWORKS PCB (Default: Unticked)
    • SOLIDWORKS Manage Client (RECOMMEND UNTICKING. Default: Ticked)
TechSoft recommend unticking this component as it involves settings up additional components on your server. In 99% of cases this will not be required in a school environment.

    • SOLIDWORKS PDM Client (RECOMMEND UNTICKING. Default: Ticked with the sub-component unticked)
TechSoft recommend unticking this component as it involves settings up additional components on your server. In 99% of cases this will not be required in a school environment.

    • SOLIDWORKS API Tools (Default: Unticked)
    • SOLIDWORKS Simulation (Default: Ticked)
    • SOLIDWORKS Motion (Default: Ticked)

  1. Also on this page, you can click the CHANGE button next to Download Options to change the location of where the software will be downloaded before installation.

We advise turning Background Downloader off by unticking Use the background downloader for future service packs as it can sometimes install the next version of SOLIDWORKS which cannot always be run using Educational licences.

  2. Finally check that the Installation location and the Toolbox/Hole Wizard location are satisfactory, then check I accept the terms of the SOLIDWORKS Licence Agreement and click Download and Install.

  3. The software will now be installed - this can take a while to complete.

Next Steps

Congratulations, the SOLIDWORKS software is now installed.

All you have left to do is enjoy the wonderful 3D CAD abilities that the software has to offer.
